The Cowper arms at Cole green has had a total makeover from dated country pub to modern yet warm and cosy venue. An Updated menu that appeals to their targeted clientele of classy higher end, this is billed as a target destination rather than the village local. Ideal for a special treat for a birthday, anniversary or date night .
Dog friendly and located in the Hertford countryside ideal for a stroll followed by the Sunday carvery sitting by the open fire. The drinks menu includes a wide variety of cocktails , I sampled the Raspberry mule (tingly absolut raspberry vodka based which certainly woke up my taste buds), and served in a copper cup with paper straw, while Melly had a mocktail called Elderflower sherbet. Along with a Gin garden for those that like the current trend of flavourful gins.
We Started with a selection of canapés sitting in the bar area ,fish cakes, falafel bite, deep fried Brie, duck salad, pork belly scallops and duck liver & port parfait, scallops of the day all delicious.
We were then seated in the main restaurant which is decorated in a darker industrial theme , to create a more intimate experience. My meal choices were the buttermilk southern fried chicken with sweet potatoes fries, apple salad and lemon aioli . All lovely except chicken was more charcoaled than deep fried.
Melly had, as usual,a starter as her main, lobster and king prawn pot with a side of potato dauphinoise. For dessert we had The house sharer which consisted of chocolate brownie, baked vanilla cheesecake , mango & berry meringue mess, bourbon vanilla ice cream cookie sandwich.
Overall our experience was very positive. A few first night issues with the food and sadly the Toilets needed to be more regularly checked (they were a little unclean). But the staff and manager were very attentive and we can see this being a go to destination for lovers of fine food, a warm welcome. Fantastic array of beverages in lovely surroundings.
