North Herts Rocks a Year In Review

It’s just over a year ago that Brian Gray and Kate Deller started North Herts Rocks on North Herts FM. The show originally started as two friends sharing their love of Rock music, bringing different bands and Rock sub-genres to the public’s attention.

Over a year later the station has rebranded to North Herts Radio and NH Rocks has evolved and matured into the show it is today.

So, what’s changed?

In April 2019, Kate decided to leave. It was a crossroads for the show. “Becky Phillips {Station Manager at North Herts FM} and I discussed the future of the show. Should we find another presenter to replace Kate or should I go it alone? In the short term, I wanted to try to take the show in a slightly different direction” recalls Brian Gray.

The next week Wyatt Pauley and Rich Pistocchi of the Pauley Lane Band from Florida, USA, visited the NH Radio studio to record a NH Rocks show. The show featured lots of chat between the trio and two live acoustic performances.

Brian recalls “The show was awesome. We had two American Rock Stars in the studio. I thought I would be a bit star-struck but the guys were amazing. They discussed how they wrote and constructed tracks plus performed two incredible live songs. Not only did we record an incredible show, but we also set a marker and new direction for Rocks plus we made two wonderful friends in Wyatt and Rich”

Rocks now had a new direction.

May saw North Herts Radio unveil their mobile Outside Broadcast unit. Those outside broadcasts forged new contacts and friendships.

On the back of Baldock Beer Festival, Brian was invited by Martin Lumsden to his Cream Room Studio’s to meet local rock band, Electric Black.

Electric Black recorded an interview and session for Rocks whilst June saw Brian at the Junction in Cambridge to interview Hollowstar and Matt Mitchell & The Coldhearts.

Rocks also began playing new music supplied by various sources, PR companies, record companies and bands themselves.

“May and June were massive months for the show” Brian adds, “With the interviews, the show came of age and North Herts Rocks became a known brand. Coupled with the fantastic new music we were receiving from so many sources, especially Judith Fisher and BJF Media, and Emma Scott and Pluggin Baby. The show now had the format that I wanted to take forward. A rock show that specialised in promoting and supporting new, unsigned and lesser-known acts as well as the British New Wave of Rock n Roll movement”

The second half of 2019 saw NH Rocks cement its position as a show that new and unsigned bands wanted their music showcased on. There were interviews with artists from Canada and the USA whilst back home, Electric Black were guests in the studio and Rocks teamed up with Dean Archer and the Rock Den in Hatfield to promote their monthly gigs.

There we more interviews with top bands including At The Sun and Scarlet Rebels, both of whom played Planet Rockstock in December.

The new music keeps coming with bands from all over the world wanting their music showcased on the show. Rock is definitely alive and kicking.

Brian concludes “North Herts Rocks has a simple format. We want to showcase new music, new bands and bands that the listener may not have heard before. Lots of shows play classic rock tracks, we want to be different. We listen to all the tracks we receive. If we like them and they rock, then we play them. I also like to introduce an artist so we ask for a short bio. I don’t just want to say this is band A and their new single. I want to introduce the band, tell the listener something about them and advertise if they are playing locally. If our listeners enjoy a track or an artist, I want to encourage them to find out more about the artist and listen to more of their work. That’s our job after all”

North Herts Rocks is THE ROCK SHOW on North Herts Radio, playing the best new rock music from around the world.

As well as playing music from the UK, Western Europe, Scandinavia, Australia and North America, Rocks has showcased artists from Japan, Israel, Argentina, Bulgaria, India and even Mongolia.

The show promotes and supports new, unsigned and lesser-known artists and Britain’s New Wave of Rock n Roll movement.

If you like Rock, Metal, Symphonic, Alternative, Industrial, Southern Rock, NWORNR or Gothic plus a few interviews, then give North Herts Rocks a listen.
